Striped Worm Lizard

Characteristics: An apodous lizard (very elongated cylindrical body without front limbs and greatly reduced hind limbs); it body is small, not exceeding 40cm in length. Its back is greenish, with 7-8 black longitudinal stripes on each side of its body, and its belly is cream-color.

Distribution: Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay.

Habitat: Open areas and forest edges, particularly in wet fields, amid leaves or in clumps of grasses and sedges in temporarily flooded areas.

Habits: Terrestrial (fossorial, burying itself under the leaf litter). This animal moves by making lateral undulations with its body.

Diet: Arthropods; insect larvae and eggs are the most important components of its diet.

Breeding: Viviparous, juveniles measure about 50mm in length.

UFRA: This species has been spotted in fields in spontaneous regeneration near drainage ditches.
