Cururu Toad
Rhinella schneideri | Werner, 1894
Characteristics: Large species, measuring 19cm to 22cm. It has warts or glands on its inner thighs that release a milky liquid when squeezed. The male is yellowish with a shade of green, while the female differs for its intense, almost uniform brown back, with few clear or yellow spots.
Distribution: This species of frog is broadly distributed in South America.
Habitat: Open formations, in savannas, fields, pastures, riparian forests, edges of gallery forests, meadows, and swamps.
Habits: Crepuscular, nocturnal, terrestrial, usually found near human habitations. On summer evenings may be seen around light poles.
Diet: Insects, arthropods and small vertebrates (mice and snakes).
Breeding: Oviparous, on the banks of rivers, lakes and swamps. The tadpoles are black. This species has a an explosive reproduction pattern during heavy rain periods, i.e. they reproduce intensely in the rainy season.
UFRA: Species found in eight of the ten environments, except in Mixed forests in regeneration and in Native forests.
