Short-tailed Hawk
Buteo brachyurus | Vieillot, 1816

Characterization: Medium to large species measuring some 48cm in length. Short-tailed, with upper portions and the sides of the head black in adults and brown in immature birds, and pure white lower parts.

Distribution: From Mexico to Argentina and Brazil.

Diet: Carnivorous, with a preference for arthropods like grasshoppers, barnacles, ants, wasps, termites, and spiders. They also hunt reptiles, amphibians, and rodents.

Breeding: Although the female usually lays 2 eggs, it is common for only one hatchling to develop. The male makes aerial exhibitions.

In the UFRA area: In the surveys conducted at the São Francisco Sugarmill farms, this species of bird was spotted only in the exotic forests. It is considered rare, since it was seen in the studied farms only once in all surveys done.
