Scarlet-headed Blackbird
Amblyramphus holosericeus | Scopoli, 1786

Characterization: Small species measuring about 23cm in total length. It has an extremely sharp beak, wide wings and long tail, and black plumage with a scarlet head, chest, and pants. Young individuals have a uniform soot color.

Distribution: From Argentina to Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. In Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso and Gurupi.

Habitat: Deep-water marshes, tibia plants and reeds, edges of canals, and riversides with dense swamp vegetation.

Habits: A diurnal species, this bird flies with some difficulty.

Diet: Omnivorous, feeding on fruits or insects.

Breeding: It lays its eggs in closed nests with side entrances.

In the UFRA area: Because it was found only in the organic sugarcane fields and in wetlands with herbaceous plants, this bird's spatial distribution is restricted within the studied areas. This is an infrequent species, as it was spotted only eight times.
