Scaly-headed Parrot

Characterization: Small to medium-sized species measuring about 27cm in length. Robust, this bird has dark-green plumage covering most of its body, with gray areas in its head and neck, a yellow beak with black base, and a red area on its short tail (lower portion).
Distribution: From the Northeast and Midwest to Rio Grande do Sul.
Habitat: High grassy areas, pine forests, and riparian forests.
Habits: A diurnal species, this bird is usually seen in small flocks, but have been seen in flocks of up to 50 individuals. It flies differently from most species of its family, keeping its wings well below its body.
Diet: Herbivorous, it feeds on various kinds of fruits, seeds, and flowers. It likes to eat pine nuts (Brazilian pine tree seeds).
Breeding: It lays its eggs in a nest built in tree hollows. The female hatches the eggs, while the male provides food.
In the UFRA area: In the studies done at the São Francisco Sugarmill areas, this bird's distribution was limited to wetlands and forests. It is considered rare because it was only spotted three times.
