Orange-headed Tanager
Thlypopsis sordida | d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837
Characterization: Small species measuring about 13.5cm in length. It has a yellowish face and neck, the top of its head is rufous, its mantle is olive, and lower parts brownish-white. The female has green upper parts and face and yellow lower parts with a brownish abdomen.
Distribution: From Venezuela to Bolivia and Paraguay, and from Brazil to Argentina.
Habitat: Treetops, including in cities.
Habits: A diurnal species, this bird usually cleans its beak rubbing it on a branch.
Diet: Herbivorous, feeding on fruits, leaves, flower buds, and nectar.
Breeding: During the mating season, it displays the brightly colored portions of its plumage.
In the UFRA area: In surveys conducted at the São Francisco Sugarmill, this bird species appeared in only two different habitats, restored native forests and mixed forests in regeneration. It was seen only 2 times, thus it is considered rare within these farms.
