Characterization: Large species measuring about 80cm in length, 61cm in height, it has a wingspan of 170cm, and weighs in at 3,150g. There is an appendix to the head similar to horns. It has big feet, white and black plumage, and two spurs on its wings.

Distribution: A species found typically in the Amazon, Ceará, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, São Paulo, Paraná, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela and Guyana, from Southern United States to Mexico and South America.

Habitat: Swamps, lakes, and bogs.

Habits: This bird lives in couples, family groups, and small flocks. When river arms or ponds dry out, they migrate.

Diet: It picks arthropods in the leaves of aquatic plants and grasses.

Breeding: This bird builds large nests with leaves and stalks that float in the swamps. Females lay two brownish olive-colored eggs.

In the UFRA area: Seen only once. Its occurrence was restricted to Native Forests.
