Characterization: Large species measuring about 58 cm in length. This bird is dark green, and its beak and legs are dark green.

Distribution: From Panama to Paraguay, almost everywhere in Brazil, and in the region of Missiones (Argentina).

Habitat: Banks of rivers and lakes, in the woods.

Habits: A diurnal species, this bird is aquatic and sociable, although flocks remain segregated.

Diet: Essentially carnivorous, feeding on larvae, crustaceans, small fish and amphibians, which they catch sifting the bottom with their beaks. They may sometimes supplement their diets with plant matter.

Breeding: This bird lays 3 to 5 eggs on platforms built on trees with twigs.

In the UFRA area: This bird species had a medium spatial distribution in the studied areas. It was spotted in the wetlands with riparian forests, in mixed forests in regeneration, and in the drainage ditches. It was found only 8 times, i.e., it is infrequent.
