Cliff Swallow
Petrochelidon pyrrhonota | Vieillot, 1817
Characterization: Species measuring about 14.3 cm in length. A northern migrant and robust species with a relatively short tail displaying a complex pattern; a whitish forehead, a bright blue cap, and a brown anterior neck and nuchal stripe.
Distribution: Coming from the North, it ranges all the way to Argentina. It occurs from Costa Rica to Bolivia to Paraguay and Argentina, and throughout Brazil.
Habitat: It inhabits open areas, agricultural fields, grasslands and forest edges, being seen regularly in urban and suburban areas.
Habits: Birds that gather in large flocks, often mixed with other swallows. They are seen foraging on the ground.
Diet: Insects, fruits and berries.
Breeding: Their nests are head-shaped and occur in colonies of hundreds of nests. Both parents incubate their eggs for 15 days and care for the nestlings until 24 days after they hatch.
