Chestnut-capped Foliage-gleaner
Hylocryptus rectirostris | Wied, 1831

Characterization: Species measuring about 21.5cm in length and weighing 48g. The largest species of the genus, it brown with an intensely rufous head, wings, and tail. 

Distribution: It occurs in Bahia and Minas Gerais, west of São Paulo, Paraná, south of Goiás and Mato Grosso.

Habitat: It inhabits riparian vegetation on the ground or a short height.

Habits: This bird often perches on vertical branches in the understory. It digs, in a clean bank, a horizontal gallery that opens terminally in a wide chamber where it prepares a nest made with dry leaves and grass.

Diet: Small insects.

Breeding: This bird nests in tunnels dug in dirty embankments.

In the UFRA area: In the studies carried out at UFRA areas, this species of bird had a restricted spatial distribution. It was only found in wetlands with herbaceous plants and in forests in spontaneous regeneration. It is considered rare because it was only spotted twice.
