GREEN CANE PROJECT A SUSTAINABLE SYSTEM FOR SUGAR CANE PRODUCTION .

One of the most important applications of the Balbo Group's agronomic knowledge is the global system for the production and harvest of raw cane: the Green Cane Project started in 1987. Its main objective is a sustainable system of sugarcane production, which seeks to manifest all of this crop´s ecological and conservation potential.

The work included thousands of hours of research and major investments, including the development of a raw cane harvester in collaboration with the manufacturer, the systematization of areas for mechanized harvesting, the adaptation of varieties, organic fertilization, phytosanitary treatment, soil preparation, among other actions.

From the preparation of soil for planting to the industrial processing of sugarcane, integration was made between the most advanced technology available and the ancestral knowledge of human beings in organic farming and land handling. As a result, São Francisco (UFRA) Plant received in October 1997 the certificate of an organic producer. Currently, UFRA organically grows sugarcane on 13,400 hectares of land and 6,000 hectares are farmed by Santo Antônio Plant under UFRA's organic agricultural production protocol. In addition, it has 400 hectares of organic certified area managed organically by its suppliers.
